Seven Seas is my favorite map. It's random enough to feel exciting but more reliable than Shuffle or Primordial which can be unplayable imo. Sometimes it's multiple big oceans you can connect with good Canal cities and build a super trade empire. Sometimes it's 1 big ass ocean and naval strength is viable.

Play Pericles or Peter on a Pangea. That will give you a good baseline of how to handle higher difficulties with an easier road to victory.
